Matriarchy in Motion: Minangkabau Women Negotiating Patriarchy

How do women in the world’s largest matriarchal society sustain everyday power within a highly patriarchal and male-centered national context?

In this live interview, Prof. Mina Elfira (Universitas Indonesia) explores how Minangkabau women in West Sumatra renegotiate matriarchal principles (adat) alongside Islamic and Indonesian laws.

We’ll unpack actual shifts in family property and economy and asking how young women are reclaiming and re-modifying adat to meet contemporary challenges.
